Favorite Finds: Kirsty's Card Catalogue

I had the pleasure of meeting Kirsty in 2010 when I did my second flea market. She and our mutual friend Rachel organized Nashville Handmade and graciously allowed vintage dealers to set up as well! Kirsty is an amazing handmade artisan and also decorates with vintage items, so I knew she would have a great Favorite Find and she did not disappoint! She details it below!

What is your favorite find and where did you find it?

It is an old card catalogue and it was found on Craigslist after some intensive searching. It's not your typical library card catalogue, as the drawers are a lot bigger.

What were your first thoughts - did you know right away you were buying it and repurposing it for craft supplies?

When I first saw it I knew it would be perfect for the purpose of storing my craft supplies away from little fingers.

Did you have to do any restoration or repairwork?

It did require a lot of work, all the draw handles were horrible, and needed replacing. The whole thing had to be sanded, and painted (it was a terrible dirty dark green originally). I also had to sand the inside of each drawer, the previous owner had stored greasy car parts in it.

Any other details we need to know?

If you look at the photos you can tell how tall my toddler is! Originally every drawer had a label, but he has slowly been removing them, luckily he hasn't worked out how to open the drawers!

Why do you love buying vintage and secondhand?

I love buying vintage and secondhand (and also handmade) because it all has a story, it's well built and you are helping the environment too.

WOW! I admire Kirsty's perseverance and patience in restoring this card catalogue - although it IS the holy grail of thrift finds! What a beautiful piece, thank you for sharing!!!

  3. Oh yes, who among us doesn't want tons and tons of little drawers to stash things in? That's awesome! And the fact that she sanded the inside of each drawer...that's a lot of of work.
