What Would You Do: Living Room Edition

Sooo, we're hoping to sell our house soon which means I obsessively look at houses for sale! We found one that we really, really, really like and I can't stop thinking about it!

It's HUGE - a lot more space than we have now! It's decorated (and painted) in a very modern style which we would change. All the red and orange would have to go!

One thing that has me perplexed is the living room. It's one of those standard 50s brick ranches that has this type of living room:

As you can see, it opens up on this side (to the dining room). Do you all know of a good source to find ideas for layouts for this style of room? If we put our TV in here, we would need to put it on a wall but I'd hate to block the windows with the couch and not be able to see out of those big gorgeous windows!

Any ideas??

One of my FAVORITE aspects of the house is this sun porch:

Isn't it gorgeous????

I just keep daydreaming and daydreaming and even regular dreaming about this house.

I have no idea what our future holds but it sure is fun to think about moving into this beautiful house!

  1. My old house was like this. And since it had another living area, I just didn't put a tv there. Do you have a 2nd living space???

    This is a toughie!

    1. They do have the house staged with a TV in another living area (a sort of "den" off the kitchen) but a "formal" living room doesn't really seem to flow with our lifestyle...I thought about pulling a Young House Love and making the giant living room a giant dining room, and then turning the dining room into an office... but I'm afraid the office would look messy and be one of the first things you see when you come in... Hmmm....

It's not even our house and I'm totally acting like it is. I need to get a hold of myself!! :)

  3. Pretty! That living room has a troublesome layout like mine does. Maybe the TV could go in the Den but you could still hang out in the front living room for other stuff and not make it fancy? The only other option is to put the TV on that right wall when you come through the front door. I've done that before but if you have a large TV, you might want to mount it on the wall to make things less intrusive when you walk in. I love the room divider thingie.

  4. Oooooh, that sun porch. So enticing!

This is the layout I'm living with now, and I really like the openness. My living room has just enough solid wall between the two windows for the TV, do I don't have quite the same problem, but I see what you mean. If you put a pretty mid century credenda against the windows, and put a flatscreen on top of it, I think it would look really good.

  5. That living room layout is very similar to my mom's house because it is a midcentury ranch as well. I would say put the TV on the short wall. it can work. Also, that sun porch is simply amazing. I would buy it just for that.

  7. Lovely sun porch. I have a sun room that I am lucky enough to get to use for my office area. So our house is kind of like that too. Well it would have been had the previous owners not knocked down a few walls. What would have been three separate areas, living room-kitchen-dining room, are all one big room now. It seems crazy, but if they aren't structural and you have the funds to knock them down, it's worth it.

  8. Ooohh exciting!! That living area is very similar to my first house. What we ended up doing was putting the TV angled in the corner between the window wall and the short wall (so, that small wall with the cool room divider for you). Since that room divider is open on top, you might have to have the TV kind of low, or more just to the side of the windows. It's workable though!
And a bit of encouragement - when I first saw my current house (my dream house!) online, our house wasn't even on the market yet! Our agent refused to show it to me, we were so not ready to buy a house. We fired that agent and put our positive vibes into getting this house and after much drama and stress it eventually happened! It can happen for you too! Can't wait to follow your progress!
