Creative Things Lately

Basically, I'm just dumping my iPhoto to my blog. :) I have been so behind on sharing things and so I'm just attempting to post the "minimum viable product" (Lean Startup anyone?).

First up: this doesn't have anything to do with anything I've done, but I was so inspired and so in love with these plants I saw when I was on a retreat:

plants

I want to live in them!

I got super sew-y and made some bibs for friends who are having babies! It was so fun to mix and match the prints. If you want the tutorial, you can find it from another Jamie Young here!

Then I sewed some fabric envelopes for a friend. You can find the tutorial for these here!

And I started learning calligraphy! I'm just learning from books right now...maybe I'll find a local class some time but for now, I'm just obsessively practicing in a little notebook and learning from an old book I bought used. I ordered Molly Suber Thorpe's book and have browsed it but haven't had time to sit down and read it yet!

Ampersands are really fun! It took me awhile to get the hang of them - as you can see above!

What creative things have YOU been up to lately???

Old School Ceramics, Part 1

ceramics8

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with vintage ceramics. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them and buy them often at estate sales.

ceramics2

Last month, Andy's grandmother mentioned that she had recently started doing ceramics again and I was delighted to hear it. I told her I'd love to join her and we set a date. I was soooooo excited! I was about to do real, old-school ceramics!

ceramics4

Nanny does ceramics in her friend Barbara's basement. She has known Barbara for 50 years! Barbara used to own a ceramics shop but now she is a hobbyist...but don't be fooled, she is seriously legit.

ceramics1

Her entire basement is filled to the brim with supplies and she even has a kiln!

ceramics3

She has hundreds and hundreds of ceramics molds and has already poured hundreds of figurines ready for cleaning.

ceramics5

Once you pick what you want to do, you clean it, which means you scrape the seams off, sand them, and restore the definition that was taken out through that process. She will fire the piece, then you glaze or dry brush it.
ceramics9

I am so drawn to Christmas ceramics, so I decided to do a Santa and Mrs. Claus (even though it's April!). I cleaned them up and this Saturday, she will teach me how to paint them. SO EXCITING!

ceramics6

I am so happy to be learning ceramics from such a talented teacher - and someone who has been doing it for decades! It makes me feel a little closer to the generations that have gone before me and it's fun quality time with Nanny!

My Smash Book

When I turned 30, I decided to start documenting our little life. I had heard of Project Life and googled to find blogs about Project Life but somehow along the way, I discovered Smash Book, a very easy, free-for-all style of scrapbooking. Both techniques interested me because with their simplicity, they both seem like the "anti-scrapbook."

Scrapbooking, to me, seems like one of those things that has gotten really excessive. Layouts and embellishments have to be perfect - there's a constant pressure to get those photos printed and arranged just right. I know a lot of people who dread scrapbooking because it's so much work! Their photos pile up and they get more and more behind which makes it harder and harder to get motivated to begin.

I didn't want to dread scrapbooking, I wanted to love it. Project Life appealed to me since it was so simple - print photos, stick them in the photo pages, and journal about the photos on 4x6 cards that fit in the pages alongside the photos. But Project Life products are a little pricey and you are a little limited in designs. (Later this year, Project Life is releasing a beautiful new collection designed by one of my favorite bloggers, Elise!)

I was on the fence about Project Life. I wanted to do it but getting started seemed intimidating since there was so much to buy and the products go in and out of stock.

As I was looking through scrapbooking products on Amazon, I started seeing Smash Book products. I was intrigued and started looking into it more. I kinda like messy things and for as long as I can remember, I have loved collaging. As a teenager, I collaged anything I could get my hands on including a wooden chair and the light switch plate in my room. Loving collages so much sparked my interest in Smash Book.

mysmash1

A Smash Book can be anything you want it to be. There are people who follow prompts and "smash" on a particular topic each day and there are people who use it as an art journal. For me, I just smash photos and souvenir scraps and document our life. It's so fun and allows me to be as creative as I want to be.

mysmash2

I smash about once a week - I have a little storage tub with all my smash supplies stored inside. I use scrapbook paper, paper scraps, some embellishments, washi tape, etc... anything that I feel like using. My layouts don't have to be perfect (I love not being a perfectionist!) - I just want to write down what we do and how I feel and what's going on in our lives. I've never been great at journaling and this helps me take time to reflect.

mysmash3

The fun thing about Smash Book is that the books are all themed and the pages all have designs on them already. I sometimes cover up the pre-printed designs and sometimes I leave them as-is. In the above wedding spread, I incorporated the flowered background into my design. Sometimes I cover the entire page in scrapbook paper, like with the Ollie spread. I wanted to be able to control the colors on those pages... but sometimes I just keep the original pages and smash all over them. I have complete creative control and I love it!

Stay tuned tomorrow for a very fun Smash Book prize pack giveaway!! I can't wait to share Smash Book with a friend. :)

Oh, and for a behind the scenes look at creative chaos... this is what it looks like in our living room when I smash:

house smash

It's a mess - but it's a fun mess!

Edited to add:

The best part about my smashing is that when I'm done with whatever pages I did, Andy takes the book from me and reads aloud what I smashed in a HILARIOUS voice. It makes even the serious pages seem funny. :)

Also --- This post is not sponsored by Smash Book at all! I just love smashing. I've been telling my friends about it for months, so I'm excited to be able to really show people what it is! Tomorrow's giveaway is provided partly by me and partly by Smash after I contacted them to see if they would be interested in doing a giveaway.

Make, Make, Make, Sew, Sew, Sew

Make, Make, Make, Sew, Sew, Sew / Let's all sew things! / Let's all sew things!

(to the tune of "Shake Your Groove Thing" if you couldn't tell)

Sorry for the cheese.

I have been really inspired to sew and work on projects. Last weekend, my sunglasses broke and I picked up a replacement pair and wanted to make sure they stayed safe in my wasteland of a purse. I came home and immediately started googling sunglasses case tutorials.

I ended up using this tutorial with slight modifications. I made my case a little bigger and sewed on my velcro rather than using iron-on velcro.

sunglasscase

TA DA! It was really easy!

I want to work on more projects in the upcoming weeks:
  • Sprocket pillows - so cute and so many possibilities with different fabrics
  • Chevron tote bag - this is a good looking tote bag!!
  • and this week I made more dresses! It is the easiest project and so rewarding! I love being able to make my own clothes even though I can't sew from a pattern.
What are your favorite, easy-peasy sewing projects? I need more sewing in my life!

Minibooks by Owl Really

IMG_2587

I spent a whole Saturday making these mini-books out of vintage children's books and random paper and notebooks I bought at an estate sale*. I love repurposing paper that would have gone in the trash otherwise!

I am considering re-opening my Etsy shop and selling the books online... but if any blog readers are interested in one, please drop me a line and we can just set up a paypal transaction! They will be $10 with free shipping within the US. Since they're my first effort in book-making, they're not perfect, but they're really cute and one of a kind! They are 4x6 on average with a few that are smaller. If you'd like a closer photo of one, I can send that to you if you describe it.

*I was really happy to find two huge boxes of paper at a recent sale - it was such a great way to stock up on a wide variety of paper for these notebooks. The insides of my books range from construction paper to graph paper to notebook paper to other sorts of vintage lined paper that I had not seen before.

I think the Non-Consumer Advocate would be really proud of me. When I decided to cut paper for hours, I knew my little sliding paper cutter wouldn't really cut it. (haha, get it? "cut it") I posted to Facebook, asking if anyone had a paper cutter I could borrow. A friend responded that she did and she brought it to me since she was on her way to the grocery near my house. When she handed it to me, she said I could keep it! Woohoo!

papercutter

It made life (and making books) much easier!

Let me know if you're interested in one of the books... I hope people are! :)

Trend: Crewel Work

This morning, Design*Sponge featured crewel work. I have been a huge fan of crewel work for a few years and have made sure to keep it stocked in my booth. I even have a piece similar to one they featured:

And a few of mine - with the white daisies on the right:

I also just stocked the 1950 crewel piece (perfect for your vintage-inspired crafting space!) but I think I am hanging on to the kite kid below:

If you're in the Nashville area and haven't been to my booth lately, swing on by at 654 Wedgewood Ave! Maybe you'll find something you like - maybe even a piece of crewel!

DIY: Easy Gnomes by Shakti Dove

I recently discovered a new-to-me blogger, Shakti Dove, and I love her blog! She posted the most adorable, easy, and free DIY gnomes:

Can you even handle how cute they are?? Now I just need to wrestle some sticks away from Lucy since she pretty much controls the sticks in our yard. :)

I fell in love with Shakti's blog when I saw that she washi taped a stick to her fridge and she said:
Has my husband noticed that there is a stick taped to the fridge? No, he has not. But when he does I think he will understand.
Reading that made me feel like I had a kindred spirit out there in the world. :)

DIY: Simple Decorated Trays

Looking for a really simple project?? Here's one!!

I picked up a few trays at Goodwill awhile ago, not sure what I was going to do with them. They ended up being really handy to hold some of my plants on my stairs! I knew that I wanted to update them, though, so I broke out the craft paint.

The smaller tray had an image that still showed through after several coats of paint (I could have used primer, I suppose!) so I decided to use some new duct tape I recently bought to cover the bottom of the tray. (This tray holds tiny plastic pots with holes in the bottom for drainage, so I think it will be easier to wipe down now that there's duct tape on the bottom!).

And now they hold some of my succulent pots!

Don't pass by an old tray next time you see it at the thrift store - it could be really handy and cute once it's painted!

PTO in Ann Arbor

I know I love hyperbole, but I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say PTO is the best thrift store I have ever been to.

PTO is a non-profit store that supports Ann Arbor Public School students through the resale of unique and gently used community donations.

And it's amazing.

It's pretty big but the best part of the store is the craft section. I have never seen an entire craft section in a thrift store before! They ask local crafters to donate their leftovers and encourage them to de-stash. They have a giant cabinet/island that has drawers on both sides that are labeled with every craft supply imaginable. There are shelves and drawers and cabinets everywhere filled with craft supplies.

I didn't want to look weird, so I took some quick photos with my phone so please forgive the blurry photos below.

You can click to see them larger if you want to marvel at this organization and stock!

Can you even believe how well-stocked they are??

I am the type of thrifter who would prefer to dig rather than peruse. I wish I could have spent hours digging through all those bins and drawers and shelves! It was like crafter heaven!

I only got one thing from the craft section but I found some great vintage magazines that I will show you in my next thrift report!

If you are ever anywhere near Ann Arbor, be sure to check out PTO. I'm soooo glad we did.

Do thrift stores in your area have a craft section?? We need something like this in Nashville!

Bunting by Stockroom Vintage

bunting1

Remember a few weeks ago when I met Elizabeth of Stockroom Vintage? Last week we got together to work on some bunting for an event she was styling. She was a sponsor of the recent Porter Flea in Nashville and was in charge of decorating the venue. She did an amazing job - check out photos of her booth on her blog!

She used scraps of fabric she already had plus fabric from a vintage dress that was too stained to salvage. She cut them into rectangles of various sizes and we simply glued them to twine. I never would have thought to mix these fabrics together but I love them! It was so easy and it turned out so well!

Below is a photo of the finished product in action at the Porter Flea!

Be sure to check out both Stockroom Vintage and the Porter Flea!

Easy Quilted Patchwork Bibs

I saw this pin from a blogger named Jaime Young (what a coincidence, right?) of Sew She Sews for quilted bibs. I fell in love with them and with my sister-in-law due to give birth in July, I was so excited to make some bibs to give to her at her baby shower!

I used a coupon at Joann Fabrics and picked out several flannel and cotton fabrics that I thought coordinated well. I picked out woodland creatures, monkeys, two different kinds of stripes, cute number fabric, and brown circle fabric. I had so much fun piecing them together and coming up with different combinations and Jaime's instructions are so easy to follow! I had never sewn anything like this before and it went so well (I normally mess up a LOT while sewing). I highly recommend her tutorial and pattern!!

Here are the bibs I made!

Here's Staci at her shower, opening the bibs!

staci

I think this is a great project for a beginning sewer who has completed some projects (like pillows and the easy dress) and is ready to try something new!

I had so much fun quilting these bibs that I even became tempted to try an actual quilt!! Something simple and modern like this one or even this "sew as you go" quilt. Those are my kinds of projects!!

I got my Whimseybox!

Have you heard of Whimseybox? It's a fun project where you subscribe to receive a box of craft supplies each month! I signed up and received my first box last week. I haven't dug in to make anything yet, but I love the idea of receiving a box of surprise craft goodies each month to inspire me!

In my first Whimseybox, I received a small jar of orange paint, a blank slap bracelet to decorate, some pink/orange ribbon wrapped around a blue stripey straw, 2 envelopes of sequins, and 2 packs of Sculpey clay. You crafty types - are your gears spinning yet on what you would make with the items?? If you have some ideas, please leave a comment!

Want to know more about Whimseybox? Find out more in the video below and on their website!
