Our Graduate!

lucygraduates

Well, this is pretty cheesy, but last week Lucy graduated from a 6 week training class! Woohoo!

We worked on training her at home but I became obsessed with the idea of taking her to the lake and seeing if she likes swimming. Her feet are slightly webbed, so I think she is built for it and might love it! BUT, Andy had a great point - we can't take her to the lake until she listens/minds us better. So, we signed up for a class with Sean at PetSmart (at 100 Oaks).

She (and we!) learned a lot but we still have a lot more to work on- like coming consistently when called and laying down. For some reason, she refuses to learn how to lay down on command. We're going to take the intermediate class with Sean later this fall to continue working on training with her. I don't think the lake is in our future this summer - I just don't think she listens well enough yet.

We got to pose with a little graduation cap on her - it was so hard to get a photo while she was squirming around and trying to fight the hat!

Happy family! :)

P.S. Andy's tattoo is a 45 adapter in case you're wondering! A lot of people ask him about it because they don't know what it is!

Shameless begging for votes...

Lucy goes to Camp Bow-Wow about once a week, on days when we know we'll be out at night and can't spend time with her. We LOVE Camp Bow-Wow and all the people there! They really love dogs and even if Lucy wears them out, we never know because they greet her enthusiastically each time I drop her off.

Our local Camp Bow-Wow is hosting a cute puppy contest and whichever photo gets the most "likes" wins 10 free days of daycare! If you're so inclined, please click over and like her photo to vote for our girl!

Thank you!!

Lucy's Nose For Vintage

My little sidekick sure has a nose for vintage.

I can't take a photo of my finds without Lucy nosing her way in.

She makes photo-taking really hard, but gosh she's cute. :)

Saturday Finds Part 2!

These are all finds from last Saturday when I hit up two amazing estate sales. (Part 1 is here!)

saturday-finds-6

I think this family had a lot of parties - after the two bar sets and the plethora of drink umbrellas I found, they looked like they had fun! Bought a ton of large and small drink umbrellas and then games at the second estate sale - Yahtzee, Scrabble, and Parcheesi plus a really cute bi-plane puzzle!

saturday-finds-7

Old magazines are so fun and I found two House Beautifuls and two Beatles covers!

saturday-finds-8

This red bag was one of the very first things that caught my eye at the first estate sale. I am contemplating keeping it - I love it! I mentioned the family must like to have fun - I also found this great Vegas/casino set. You can play a bunch of different casino games on it!

At the second sale, I found twin sheets still in the package! Perfect for a vintage-loving mom who's decorating her hip son's room! Also grabbed a Bobbsey Twins book and a Lassie book plus a Highlights magazine from 1955.

saturday-finds-9

This green metal basket was a treasure trove of vintage packaging! I totally thought of Eartha Kitsch when I found it! It's full of vintage hair products (including perm supplies!) and shoe shining items. I haven't dug through it a ton yet, but I'm excited to research the different brands and products.

saturday-finds-10

I just added a ton of jewelry to my booth, so I was happy to find two jewelry boxes to hold it all in!

saturday-finds-11

Vintage sparklers still in the box! So cool! And I can't pass up such pretty stationery in a box! I also got some pretty drawer liner and this adorable deer!

Lucy loved the deer too:

lucy-and-the-deer

Whew! That was almost everything I found over the weekend but I left some different little books and paper out. I bought a french grammar workbook and a "camp songs" book and things like that.

I won't be adding it all to my booth right away - it feels a little crammed right now, so I'll be slowly adding items. If you're in town and curious about a specific item and when it's going in there, just let me know!

Lucy's First Birthday

We were so excited to celebrate Lucy's first birthday this weekend! We bought her a new collar and leash, a huge new Nylabone, a new rope, and some dental treats. We had fun giving her her presents, baking pupcakes, and taking her to the dog park!

pupcakes

She really liked her pupcake! We took some leftovers to Andy's mom's dog and to my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's dog. They were super easy to make and while they didn't taste that great to me, I think the dogs really liked them. :) I used this recipe if you want to make them for your own pup!

I love taking Lucy to the dogpark because she has so much fun! She runs around and greets ALL the people and then finally finds some dogs to play with. I think she might like the people more than the dogs! :)

She found a friend to play tug-of-war with, which was so cute.

She found a frisbee, which is one of her favorite kinds of toys:

She had so much fun and got so tired. She cuddled with me all Saturday night while I watched Pride & Prejudice (the good one!) with a friend. I love when she's so tired and sweet and not hyper! We're still waiting for the English Bulldog in her to overtake the Boston Terrier in her so she'll be lazy and sweet and cuddly ALL the time. :)

Lucy and the Wiffle Ball

I've posted photos of crazy Lucy before, but I just can't get enough of them. :)

Lucy is really obsessed with wiffle balls, which we discovered when she found a rogue one in our yard that we assume a neighbor's kid hit over our fence. She went crazy for it, so we bought her a pack that she has been going through.

She somehow pops them in half and then prances around with them in her mouth in the most hilarious ways.

We really love this crazy pup. :)

Just a little pick me up...

It's been a weird week and I'm feeling a little drained so I wanted to post a pick-me-up for myself and anyone else who may be in a funk. I took this photo of Lucy this morning and it might be my favorite thing ever.

Bon Ami Winner + Lucy Updates

I'm excited to announce the winner of the Bon Ami Thrill of the Hunt cleaning kit! I chose a winner using Random.org:

Congrats to my friend and neighbor, Rae! In other cool Rae news, she is opening a case at the Tennessee Antique Mall in July! Rae, please email me your address to pass on to Bon Ami!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered!

And now, on to some Lucy updates!

In this first photo, you can see that she thinks she is human. She always lays with her head on a pillow which is so stinkin' cute.

lucy

She is growing up so quickly! She is now 7 months old and such a delight. She constantly cracks us up and brings so much joy to our lives! She only barks with an inside voice which is so great, and usually only in order to communicate with us. She doesn't bark at people or animals she sees outside... just when she wants to tell us something. :)

If you haven't seen the posts from the beginning, she's a Boston Terrier/English Bulldog mix and she's amazing!

She also tried to put her 2 cents in on this post by pawing my keyboard but I thwarted her attempts to say hello... sorry guys! :)

Thirty Before 30: Decorating the Living Room Wall

My birthday was so great - I am so thankful for all the amazing people in our lives! I will write more soon about it - stay tuned!

Meanwhile, do you remember when I posted a hilarious photo of a flower drawing Andy hung on the wall? I had hammered SO many nails in the wall and hung a lot of frames filled with various things but then took them down once we were married and he moved in because the arrangement felt VERY girly. I took down his flower drawing and hung it on our fridge which left the wall above our couch empty for months and months and months.

Recently, I decided to no longer use nails and instead use 3m Command Strips. I love these things! They are so versatile and work SO well.

It took me awhile to figure out the configuration I wanted and which prints/drawings/print-outs/etc to hang. I went with the below arrangement which is all subject to change since it's so easy to swap out with the strips! (No, I'm not getting paid to promote them, I just love them!)

livingroom

PS, it's really hard to take photos of frames with glass! How do people do that? Is there a trick I'm missing? Do professionals remove the glass for photo shoots?

The arrangement is a little small for the wall but it works for now. (It might also be too high, or that might be an optical illusion.) Someday, I'd love to get larger artwork or something but for now, this is what we have - a mixture of original art from an estate sale, old family photos of my mom and her cousins, a cute globe postcard from "France" in Epcot, my Rebekka Seale sparrow print, a few ACEOS from etsy, and the birdcage print is an old school flashcard.

Someday I really want a new couch - a more streamlined, mid-century couch. I got this one on Craigslist years ago when my style was very shabby chic/pottery barn-esque and unfortunately I haven't been able to find an appropriate couch and then we got Lucy and want to wait to make sure she wouldn't tear a new couch up.

What has been keeping me busy?

Oh, lots of things!

I have been loving plants and flowers lately and so I've been working more with them. Lucy (by way of her grandma Young) gave me a cute dog planter for mother's day and I got free* marigolds at Wal-mart the very next day, so I planted those.

marigolds

dog planter

So cute, huh? The dog looks pretty similar to Lucy and the head and tail bob, which is pretty darn cute. I put it out on our deck, which gets full sun, so the poor marigolds haven't been very happy, unfortunately!

Those aren't the only flowers I've been working with, though!

When we got married, I bartered with my hairstylist, Lauren. She did my hair and I pledged to day-of-coordinate her wedding in the future. She got married in April in a private ceremony and planned a super cute and intimate reception Sunday night at The Boundry in Nashville. My major duty was picking up the geraniums and cutting them and arranging them in tiny vases then transporting them to the venue. Lauren had everything under control and the reception was so relaxed and the Boundry staff were so amazing that I barely had any other responsibilities! I wish I could have done more for Lauren and Alex but they are definitely laid back and have the right attitude toward weddings and marriage!

Here are the beautiful geraniums I got to play with!

geraniums

And a photo of the cute vases, a blurry pic of one of my little arrangements, and another show of the whole bunch of them. It was nice to play florist in my kitchen for a little while!

geraniums2

The reception was a great success! Lauren and Alex are about to move to California (agh!) and I am really going to miss her friendship and talent with my unruly hair!!

These are just a few of the things I've been working on... stay tuned for more!

*Free marigolds - ha! Funny story and also the biggest waste of 10 minutes of my life! I was checking out and was asked if I wanted to donate to Vandy Childrens' Hospital. I said sure and the cashier told me that for donating, I got a free plant. She told me to show my receipt to the person outside and they would give me my free plant. I walked outside (mind you, this whole time I am pushing a cart full of stuff) and there was no one out there. There was, however, an employee corralling carts inside. I asked him if he knew who to ask about the free plants and he had no idea what I was talking about. (red flag #1!) He said to ask in customer service, so I pushed my cart back inside and stood in line at customer service. There was only one person behind the counter and the line was growing longer and longer. When it was finally my turn, she (surprise!) had no idea what I was talking about.

I suddenly felt like everyone thought I was trying to scam them into giving me a free plan. Just at that moment, an older British lady started asking a greeter about her free "plahnt." She said "The cashier told me I get a free plahnt!" So, I officially knew that I was not alone and was not pulling a scam. The customer service rep started calling people and trying to figure out what was going on, but in a tone that definitely still conveyed that she didn't really believe us.

A manager finally came around and told us that the free plants were the hanging baskets in the black pots. The British lady and I were like "Wow, a hanging basket? That's awesome!" (She probably said "brilliant" and not awesome.) We both hauled our carts back outside and the hanging baskets were $16 each. Neither of us felt very ethical taking a $16 plant for a $1 donation, so back inside we went to clarify. The manager said, "The $1 hanging baskets," and we assured him there were no $1 hanging baskets.

So, skeptical customer service rep came outside with us and led us to the little trays of flowers and said "These." They were neither $1 nor hanging, which is why we originally passed them up. I was so done with the whole ordeal that I just grabbed the first ones I saw, which happened to be these very cute french marigolds that are now, unfortunately, dying.

Thrift Report: Don't Be Crewel

Are you a vintage fan who appreciates crewel work or do you pass it by when you see it? I admit, I have a love affair with crewel. Some styles I will pass up - like the log cabin scenes... not a fan. But I love flowery crewel - especially the brightly colored pieces.

This week, I hit the jackpot on crewel pieces. The first piece is medium size but the other 2 are huge - really, really big! (They are not to scale in the collage below, woops.) It's rare to find a piece that is framed that is still clean and doesn't need washing! (If yours does need cleaning, though - you can easily clean it to restore it!)

Here are the 3 pieces I found last week:

These will look perfect in a vintage-lover's home! I'm excited to add them to my booth.

Keeping in line with my granny-chic vibe, I also picked up this awesome rainbow zigzag afghan at an estate sale:

Speaking of Lucy, here is a new photo of our little girl. She's 4 months now!

Isn't she the cutest??? :)

Lucy's First Play Date!

Last week, Lucy got her last round of shots, which meant she could finally meet other dogs! I am so excited to socialize her with other pups. We took her up to Nashville Pet Products on Friday to break the ice and meet new people and pups and she did great! Everyone at the shop loved her - she is the belle of the ball wherever we go! She is really great with people and we were so eager to introduce her to dogs!

We took her to our friends Shannon and Grey's house, where they have 2 smaller adorable dogs - Hank and Lila who are both about 3 years old. Hank has an old soul, though, and was not interested in playing with energetic Lucy at all! We joked that he's the "Get off my lawn!" kinda guy.
Lila and Lucy play similarly, but Lila wasn't sure what to make of Lucy when Lucy would pounce or paw at her. It took them all some time to warm up and when Molly, who Shannon and Grey were dogsitting, came out to play - everything changed! She and Lucy chased and chased and chased each other and Lila got in on the action and the three of them had so much fun!

Lucy played non-stop for almost 3 hours which meant even the next day, she was still totally groggy! I got some hilarious photos mid-action (like the one above) which make Lucy look crazy, but really she was just having a blast! In the below photos, Lila is the all black pup and Molly is the pomeranian-ish one. (Not sure of her exact mix!)

Lucy has crazy eyes! She is so fun. I'll try to post videos from her playdate soon!

Thrift Report: Finally!

Since we got Lucy, I haven't had a chance to thrift!! I snuck out on Saturday afternoon and made it over to the Goodwill Outlet and picked up a few things - nothing super exciting, but some OK stuff!

A mauve clutch (I love 80s clutches!), a 1937 edition of How To Win Friends and Influence People, and some really adorable woodlands creatures greeting cards! You know the moment they bring out new bins at the Outlet and people are going insane throwing stuff around and you are standing behind them and can't get in and don't WANT to get in, because you will probably get injured? That's when I saw these cards and I had to wait for crazy people to get out of the way so I could try to gather up the random cards. I wish I had found more! The raccoon is so, so cute!

And now for a Lucy update!

It's hard to get a photo of her because she is a bundle of energy! She is sporting her new "Lucy Young" tag that her grandma Young got her for Valentine's Day! She is spoiled rotten and we love her so much!! :)

Meet Lucy!

No Thrift Report to share today - I've been too busy with the newest addition to our family!

Isn't she the cutest??

Andy has always wanted a bulldog but I'm not really into them. I somehow fell in love with boston terriers (even though I've always been really into small, furry dogs) and so we compromised on a boston bulldog. We found one available and picked her up on Saturday!

She is a stinker! (figuratively and literally, haha!)

These photos were taken in a rare moment of stillness. She has SO much energy!

Oh goodness. My heart runs over. :)
