Friday Fun: Vintage Family Photos + Louisville Zoo

It's been a weird and stressful week. Life decisions are hard! So, how about looking at some cute photos of vintage animals...or should that be vintage photos of cute animals? :)

If you're new around here, each Friday this spring I'm posting vintage photos from my childhood that my mom scanned for me!

Up today we have a family trip to the Louisville Zoo! I'm thinking these photos might be from 1986ish. Hard to tell how old I am below!

The Louisville Zoo always had an amazing polar bear exhibit. I haven't been there in at least 10 years, so I'm not sure if it's still the same, but the exhibit was designed so that you could get really cool views of them swimming underwater. It was always one of my favorite parts!

Friday Fun: Vintage Family Photos + Puppies!

april 84- sept 84 181

This was Bugar. Pronounced Booger. I only know it was spelled Bugar because she has a headstone in the backyard that my mom carefully painted her name on. She was my parents' dog when I was born and I'm pretty sure we were best friends.

Somehow, Bugar had puppies. (Wasn't she spayed?!? Tsk tsk, mom & dad!) :)

LOTS of puppies!

april 84- sept 84 045

Look at that one little brown one! So cute.

Was I in puppy heaven, or what??

Just a girl and her pups!

What Would You Do: Living Room Edition

Sooo, we're hoping to sell our house soon which means I obsessively look at houses for sale! We found one that we really, really, really like and I can't stop thinking about it!

It's HUGE - a lot more space than we have now! It's decorated (and painted) in a very modern style which we would change. All the red and orange would have to go!

One thing that has me perplexed is the living room. It's one of those standard 50s brick ranches that has this type of living room:

As you can see, it opens up on this side (to the dining room). Do you all know of a good source to find ideas for layouts for this style of room? If we put our TV in here, we would need to put it on a wall but I'd hate to block the windows with the couch and not be able to see out of those big gorgeous windows!

Any ideas??

One of my FAVORITE aspects of the house is this sun porch:

Isn't it gorgeous????

I just keep daydreaming and daydreaming and even regular dreaming about this house.

I have no idea what our future holds but it sure is fun to think about moving into this beautiful house!

Lark Rise To Candleford

If the season finale of Downton Abbey has left a hole in your heart, check out Lark Rise to Candleford!

Lark Rise to Candleford is based on semi-autobiographical novels written by Flora Thompson. The show follows Laura Timmins, a young teenager from a very small village called Lark Rise, as she moves to Candleford to work for her cousin the Postmistress in 1894. Similar to Downton Abbey, you get to watch families, friends, and co-workers from two different socioeconomic statuses interact and navigate the differences between them.

The series aired beginning in 2008 and it must have been shot in HD because the scenes are so beautiful. (Have you ever turned on an older BBC show and been completely turned off by the poor quality? You won't be disappointed with this show!) There are 4 seasons for a total of 40 episodes.

The show is DELIGHTFUL! I love the relationships among the neighbors and how community-focused everyone is. There is some drama but nothing too crazy (no Turkish diplomats, if you know what I mean!) and everything always works out in the end. The ONLY problem I had was that in Season 1, the story lines relied heavily on characters that were introduced for one episode. Their stories were told and then we never saw them again. I prefer storylines that thread through a season rather than everything getting tied up neatly in the course of 50 minutes.

It took me a few episodes to sort all the characters out, so here's a run down in case you begin the series!

Lark Rise's main inhabitants:

Laura's parents: Robert and Emma Timmins. Robert is played by (drumroll please!) Brendan Coyle, none other than Mr. Bates from Downton Abbey. If you like Mr. Bates, you will love Robert Timmins. He and Emma are SO in love and even though he has a bad temper sometimes, they always work their problems out. Emma is a wonderful neighbor to everyone in Lark Rise.

Queenie and Twister Turrell: Queenie is the "matriarch" of Lark Rise. Everyone turns to her for advice and help - she always has a natural (or supernatural) remedy for anything that ails them. Twister is loveable but struggles with the drink and goes a little overboard in everything he does.

The Arlesses: Caroline Arless is the liveliest resident of Lark Rise. She is jovial and full of life but struggles to raise her children while her husband is away at sea. Her oldest son is Alf, Laura's best friend.

Candleford features:

Dorcas Lane, Postmistress. She is single and the ultimate independent woman. She inherited the post office and the forge from her father and has run them successfully on her own. She cares greatly for her neighbors and would do anything for them. She is sometimes sharp-tongued but always has other people's best interest at heart.

Sir Timothy, the squire, owns all the land from Lark Rise to Candleford. He is Dorcas' former love and there is still a LOT of tension there. He's pretty dreamy even though he makes a lot of mistakes.

The Pratt sisters, Ruby and Pearl, own a dress shop across the street from the post office. They are incredibly nosy and judgmental. They get a few redeeming moments throughout the series, but mostly they are the snarksters of Candleford.

Thomas Brown works in the post office and he is a ridiculous caricature of a very self-righteous Christian. I never really understand what his deal is. He is hard on himself and everyone else, but ultimately does have a good heart.

If I name any more characters, I might give something away! SO, that's all for now... please let me know if you start watching it! It's available for streaming on Amazon Prime but is probably also available on DVD at your local library! There's a great review here!

Calling all Nashville Brides: Budget Wedding Bootcamp

Life is so funny, sometimes! When I was only working part time this summer, I became obsessed with the thought of teaching a class through The Skillery. Then, I got an awesome job and I put my desire to teach a class on the backburner. Amazingly, at work, our team brought in Cara Davis for a meeting. I was familiar with Cara because she used to work for Relevant Magazine and I listened to her on their podcast every week. Cara and I instantly had so much in common and we bonded over our love of budget weddings!

Cara was already working on a Budget Wedding Bootcamp with her friend Casey and they brought me in to help teach! I'm so excited to teach about something I'm passionate about -- not spending a fortune and going into debt for a wedding! I truly believe that a wedding should be more about the marriage than the party and I'm really excited to meet with other women who feel the same way and give them the tools they need to plan a budget wedding!

P.S. I'm very excited that Melissa is letting us meet at Pistils and Petals! If you haven't been yet, be sure to stop by and pick up some flowers or fun handmade or vintage items!
